In merge mode the archive will merge folders with the same name together, instead of creating separate revisions every time you drag new versions into it. The result will be one folder that holds the cumulative contents of all the versions dragged in, instead of separate “snapshots”. 
The archive will also only make a new revision of a file if the version being dragged in differs from the revisions already there.
